Wimpole Hall Servants, c1902 Image: c1902. The quality of the original image
(large mounted print) is rated as 'fair' - the contrasts are fading to
a light brown but the clarity of the faces is exceptional. The image at
both bottom corners has deteriorated. This superb photograph is understood to show the staff at Wimpole Hall, with their families, around the turn of the century. Click on any face in the main image to see that section of the photograph in greater detail. One person has been positively identified - John Reed, the Arrington cobbler, can be seen in the back row fourth from the right. The two people in the centre of the group (see detail left) are possibly Harry and Emma Herne, Butler and Housekeeper to Lord Robartes, 6th Viscount Clifden. The 1901 Census for Wimpole Hall contains the following entries
and it is likely that most, if not all, are present in this photograph. |
