Wimpole Lodge and War Memorial, c1922
Image loaned by Brenda and Michael Skinner
Image: c1922, village scene, winter, looking
north-east towards Cambridge, quality of the available image (an original
postcard) is rated 'excellent'.
Location: the original junction between Ermine
Street (A1198) and Cambridge Road (A603). The junction is now closed.
The brand new Wimpole and Arrington War Memorial is
on the left and Wimpole Lodge (141 Cambridge Road) is on the right. Because
of the commemorative wreaths, the month is probably November and the year
sometime in the early 1920's.
The Wimpole and Arrington War Memorial was
dedicated in the early twenties to the memory of the eighteen men who
died during the Great War. Three further names were added in 1947, dedicated
to those who gave their lives during the Second World War.
Wimpole Lodge was traditionally the residence of the Land
Agent to the Wimpole Estate until it was sold into private ownership in
1934.
Photographer believed to be Robert H Clark of Royston.
