Coronation Celebrations, 26 June 1911 Image: 26 June 1911, village event, looking
due north, quality of the available image (original postcard) is rated
'poor' Parish celebrations by Arrington and Wimpole villagers in front of Wimpole Hall to mark the Coronation of Their Majesties King George V and Queen Mary. The parade has arrived via Arrington Gates (from the left). Coronation Day itself was on Thursday 22 June 1911, and this was declared a national public holiday. However, both this photograph and the one at Arrington Gates (left) bear the date 26/6/11 which was the Monday following and presumably a work day. Either Wimpole and Arrington celebrated a little later than the rest of the country or the date refers to the day the photographs were processed. The above image is from an original postcard and is of poor quality. The postcard is unposted but bears the following (rather alarming!) message in pencil on the reverse: "The doctor has just cut him in the neck". Incidentally, their majesties King George V and Queen Mary visited Wimpole Hall in 1928 and they both signed the Wimpole Parish Church Visitors' Book. |
