War Memorial - Service of Dedication c1947 Image: c1947, community event, quality of the
available image (large print) is rated as 'excellent'. Probably a press
photograph. Third of three photographs. A Remembrance Day dedication service held at the Wimpole and Arrington War Memorial shortly after the Second World War. The Wimpole and Arrington War Memorial is located on the northern corner of the original intersection between Ermine Street (now the A1198) and Cambridge Road (now the A603). The corner was the significant point on the road midway between the villages of Arrington and Wimpole. The Memorial was erected and dedicated in the early 1920's to the memory of the eighteen men who died during the Great War. Three further names were added to the cross in c1947, dedicated to those who gave their lives during the Second World War. Commemorative wreaths are being laid by local dignitaries and by families of those named on the memorial. A new surround to the memorial plinth had also been built and, on the evidence of the above photograph, the work was completed just prior to the day of the service. Please e-mail if you can put any names to the faces. |
